For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.

I don’t know about you, but when I hear the word masterpiece, I immediately think of artists like Michelangelo and his work in the Sistine Chapel. I think about his sculpture, David, and how dedicated he was to perfecting it (See my post about David here). A masterpiece is a thing of beauty, right?
After studying this particular verse, I had to take it to the dictionary to see exactly what the definition is. According to dictionary.com, a masterpiece is a person’s greatest piece of work.
Raise your hand if you look at yourself and your life, and you can easily think of words like chaotic, messy, and imperfect to describe what you see, but masterpiece is not anywhere on that list. I’ll note my hand is raised high in the air.
The beautiful thing about our God is that even in the messiest part of our lives, we are still considered his masterpiece. We are his greatest piece of work. YOU are his greatest piece of work! We don’t have to clean ourselves up in order to be called his masterpiece, and we don’t have to clean ourselves up in order to do the good things he created us to do. Isn’t that great news!
You see, we can try all day long to “beautify” ourselves and clean up the mess around us, but it would never be good enough. No matter how much cleaning we do, we are still sinners in need of Jesus. That same scripture says once we’ve become Christ followers, we are created anew (in new form). This means all our mess and chaos is covered and “cleaned up” by Jesus, creating a beautiful masterpiece. Only he can fully clean us up.
We are a masterpiece all while still being a work in progress. It’s what I like to call Beautiful Chaos. Once you realize you are your own beautiful chaos, and allow yourself to be both at the same time, you’ll also be able to see what you have to offer the world matters. According to Ephesians 2:10, we were created to do good things. We were created with a purpose. Your purpose matters to the world. Your purpose matters to God. He wouldn’t have placed it inside of you if it didn’t.
I challenge you today to give yourself permission to be the beautiful chaos you are. Sometimes it’s messy. Sometimes it’s not pleasant, but you are a masterpiece. You are God’s greatest piece of work created to do amazingly wonderful things.
Get out there, and be the amazing person God already knows you to be!
