I Have a Dream

This weekend I told my 6 year old that we get a day off on Monday and how I was excited to get to spend the day together.  Before I had the chance to tell him why we have a holiday, he proceeded to tell me.  In school, he learned that it was to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, and he knew that he had a dream that all people of different colors would be treated equal.  He was able to tell me what he had learned, but he didn’t really understand what it meant.

While we drove home, I explained to him more of the importance of the dream he had.  When we got home, we sat down to watch the entire speech.  Sitting on the couch with my family to watch the speech heard around the country I believe is one of the most priceless memories I will carry with me forever.  Life is so different than it was during this time, and if we look closely, we’ll see that it really wasn’t all too long ago.

During the speech, my 6 year old looked at me and said, “If we still lived by these rules, me and Sherina wouldn’t be able to be good friends.”  I do believe he understands.

I responded, “That’s right, and Mommy and Mrs. Peaches wouldn’t get to be friends, and she is one of my very best friends in the world.”

Even typing that right now brings tears to my eyes to think of a world where we can’t have those friends in our lives.  Praise God for this man who had a dream.  Praise God even more for this man who TOLD his dream!

What if he had this dream and kept it to himself?  Where would we be?  What would your classroom look like?  What about your job, church, dining and shopping experiences?  Take a moment and think about the impact this speech has on your life today.  I think too often we get caught up in the fact that we don’t have school or work on this day, but we never stop to think about the real reason why.

I believe God used this man in a powerful way, and I pray when you look around you and see all colors of the spectrum, you know that each and every one of those people (including you) were created equal.  God loves us all the same and doesn’t ever see the color of our skin.  He sees what’s in our hearts.

  1. You make a great point, Misty! I believe the world would be a better place if more people told their dreams. One great legend, Dr. King, told his dream and changed the world so that everyone can be equal and have rights that we used to not have. But just imagine the other areas the world would be free in, if more people had a dream and not kept it to themselves but told their dream. This should encourage every person young, old, alike, different, to speak out about their dreams. It can change the world! Thank you so much for sharing!

    1. I do believe if we are given a dream, it’s important to share that dream with others and strive to make it happen. I can’t imagine if he kept this hidden inside of him hoping someone else would step up and make it happen. I wonder how many people do keep it hidden in hopes that someone else will make something happen?

My husband and I talked about this last night because, although things have drastically changed, not everyone embraced his dream and still do not embrace it. Our parents are from the generation that lived through this time, and I wonder how much difference we will see when that generation is gone and how much they’ve passed down to their children? I’m not sure if it makes sense, but it was our topic of conversation last night. It makes absolutely no sense to me that any race should feel superior to another. I can’t comprehend that type of thinking.
